SUMMARY:On Belonging Performance
DESCRIPTION:This November\, the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance (DVAA) is delighted to present On Belonging at the Tusten Theatre in Narrowsburg. On Belonging is an initiative by Standing People Together Theatre designed to draw on the voices of the community. The project was developed in part through funding provided by a Sullivan 180 grant. \nThe evening promises to showcase both the wealth of writing and acting talent in the area\, with performances of four original plays written by local playwrights\, each exploring a different response to the idea of “belonging” (or not) in a particular place and time. \n“We aim to highlight the issues surrounding the concept of ‘belonging’ and ‘place’\, to raise awareness of their connection to well-being and health and to start a conversation which we hope will lead to a greater civic muscle in Sullivan County.” \nYou can purchase tickets for the performances here: https://delawarevalleyartsalliance.org/event/on-belonging-11-02-2024/

SUMMARY:Critical Conversations
DESCRIPTION:Engineering and Care for our Communities \nThis year\, Caroline Baillie\, Eric Feinblatt\, and Sarah Brownell from RIT\, will be hosting conversations around the theme\, ‘Engineering and Care for our Communities’ – we invite you to bring your own questions\, conversation topics\, and activities. Just to get started …. How can engineering incorporate design principles with the aim of developing closed-loop\, symbiotic\, self-sustaining human habitats and productions systems that do not result in ecological degradation or social injustice? \nMany of you have attended before and know what to expect\, but for those who haven’t\, here are some details. \nJune 19th: arrival for overnight retreat guests\nJune 20th: 9 AM breakfast followed by retreat workshop until 5PM. Lunch provided. Afterwards\, there is open space for enjoying the forest\, swimming\, kayaking on the pond\, and dinner\nJune 21st: 9 AM breakfast followed by retreat workshop until 5PM. Lunch provided. You are welcome to stay overnight and travel the following day if you need to. \nThe registration fee is $50 or $100 depending on your ability to pay. This covers the cost of food and materials. If you have special requests or needs regarding payment or anything else\, please email Caroline Baillie. Also\, let us know if you’d like to pay for someone else. \nTravel: We are located at about 2.5 hrs from NYC or 1.5 hrs from Binghamton by car\, or you can catch a train or bus from NYC\, and we can arrange transport from the station. Let us know if you will do this and we can share further details. \nPlease fill out this survey\, which we will use for registration: https://ggle.io/5kHj \n

SUMMARY:Critical Conversations
DESCRIPTION:Engineering for ‘whole health’ (people and planet \nThe theme for this year’s Critical Conversations Retreat emerges from discussions around Caroline’s new online Masters program\, MESH – MS in Engineering for Sustainability and Health\, which is explicitly transdisciplinary and grounded in the principles of social and environmental justice. \nIt’s always tricky to bring disparate disciplines together and focus on problems that\, at first glance\, seem only tangentially related (if at all) to the expert knowledge of one’ particular discipline. Our first challenge\, then\, is to discover new ways of communicating and exchanging knowledge\, to knowledge-build across disciplines\, and apply that knowledge to real world problems that are oblivious to disciplinary boundaries. How do we bring a public health perspective to engineering – and look after our ‘whole health’; what does planetary health look like from an engineering systems perspective; how does engineering and urban development affect the emergence of pandemics; and how can we bring social ecologists\, ecosystem and climate change experts as well as public health professionals and peace and justice activists into the same space as engineers\, and co-design heterodox practices? \nDetails \nDates 4th/5th June\nOne day hiking in the Catskills – a ‘walk shop’ One day outdoors in the forest at Cala Munda\nAccommodation – due to Covid we will not offer any on site accommodation\, but we welcome you to camp on our land or stay at a local Airbnb/Guest house. (Book early as it’s popular in the summer).\nTransport – Hankins is located 2/12 hours NW of NY City – self drive from Binghamton or NY airports or train from NY + shared rides from Middletown train station 75 minutes away \n$150 registration fee – includes all meals\nTo ensure equity of access to this event\, please contact us if you need financial support for the registration fee as we may be able to find funds to cover this and/or limited travel costs.

SUMMARY:Drama in the Woods
DESCRIPTION:Standing People Together invites you to enroll in our Autumn 2020 Forest Exploratorium. \nLike to Act or\, at least\, give it a try? Love to be outside? This may be for you! \nDrama in the Woods is an 8-wk out-of-doors\, at-a-distance after-school program for elementary age children. Participants will improvise stories\, make masks\, music and sets\, and use movement to create and perform an original virtual production inspired by Uno’s Garden\, Graeme Base’s story of a forest rich with phantasmagoric animal and plant life that is slowly and almost irretrievably eroded by the needs of the people who begin to inhabit and dominate that special place. \nOur team will be based in our forest studio\, and participating children will be in their backyards or local nature spaces with mobile devices where possible\, and/or they will move outside to engage in nature-based activities and return inside for shared zoom sessions. \nThanks to the support of Sullivan Renaissance and our own team\, we are offering this program at very low cost. We do ask for a small fee to register your child as places are limited and\, please\, attendance throughout the eight week program is necessary to make the production possible.

SUMMARY:Critical Conversations Retreat #3: Engineering and Degrowth
DESCRIPTION:The magnitude of the human-driven degradation of our planet’s life support systems can easily leave us at a loss at where to begin – all the more so because efficiency and productivity (those twin poles of an unfettered growth paradigm) are in the DNA of most engineers who have scant practice separating the aims of growth from its increasingly dire consequences. \n\n\n\nMissing in conversations between environmentalists\, activists\, and political economists is the voice of the engineer who can tackle this head on. What would design and production look like if\, like the natural world\, we created just enough and wasted nothing? What role would automation play if it were to be fair to workers and to the planet? \n\n\n\nSurrounded by the forest\, and inspired by the elegance of nature’s complex ecosystem\, our conversations about degrowth will begin to grapple with these critical issues and consider pathways to further the conversations about the future of engineering practice. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n[rtec-registration-form]
